Do you know why Photos are rectangular? Ever wondered, Why?

Have you ever wondered why your smartphone’s camera lens is circular, but your selfies come out rectangular? Or why we don’t have triangular landscapes or octagonal portraits? Interesting point, right?

Let’s dive into the boxy world of digital photos and uncover the rectangular truth!

The Rectangle sensors

Even though our camera lenses are circular, but the processor behind them is rectangular. But why?

  1. Circular Lenses: The circular shape allows light to enter uniformly and focus it onto the sensor.
  2. Rectangular Sensors: The rectangular shapes of sensors allow to capture most of the circular image projected by the lens.
  3. Efficient Processing: Rectangular sensors are easier to manufacture and process data more efficiently.

From Boxy TVs to Widescreen Wonders

Remember those old-school TVs that looked like they swallowed a beach ball? They were practically square, with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Here’s a quick history lesson:

  • 1940s-1990s: 4:3 ratio (like a slightly tall rectangle)
  • 1990s-2000s: 16:9 widescreen (the rectangle)
  • Today: Even wider ratios like 21:9 for that cinematic feel

But Why only rectangular wider ratio?

It’s All in the Eyes

Turns out, we humans are partial to rectangles. Our eyes have a horizontal field of view wider than our vertical one. In other words, we’re built for widescreen! Digital photos simply mimic what our eyes do naturally.

The Golden Ratio: Nature’s Favorite Rectangle

Ever heard of the golden ratio? It’s approximately 1.618:1, and it’s oddly satisfying to our brains. Many modern cameras use aspect ratios close to this magical number. Coincidence? Certainly not!

The common 3:2 ratio (1.5:1) is pretty close to golden!

Practicality in Pixels

Rectangular photos are also just practical. They:

  1. Fit nicely on our screens
  2. Print well on standard paper sizes
  3. Look great in photo albums (remember those?)
  4. Stack efficiently when stored digitally
